A Cotswold Village

December 17, 2006 at 8:41 am (Books)

Traversing around the world wide web I recently landed in the Cotswolds of England, famous for thatched roofed cottages and the Cotswold Lion, a very wooly sheep.

An interesting book came to my attention, written by one J. Arthur Gibbs in 1888, called A Cotswold Village or Country Life and Persuits in Gloucestershire. It is about life in the Cotswolds in the late 19th century.

My Cup Runneth Over

December 16, 2006 at 9:16 pm (Music)

When I was a young girl, I used to love listening to the smooth, yet strong voice of Ed Ames as he sung My Cup Runneth Over. The album came out in 1967 when I was only 6 years old, and I remember having a copy of it until I was at least in college. I don’t know just why the song captured my attention so much . . . was it the mesmerizing melody that melted my heart, the romantic words of devoted love, or that he was the actor that played an Indian on one of my favorite TV shows as a kid?

Our Deportment

December 16, 2006 at 8:06 pm (Books)

I am utterly fascinated with the historical eras – Medieval, Regency, Victorian & Edwardian. But my utmost favorite is the Victorian era. A must have guide on the conduct that was expected of the days between 1837 to 1901, during the reign of England’s Queen Victoria, was Our Deportment written by John H. Young in 1881.

A little girl is told by her father that she is a princess and she believes it with all her heart despite her circumstances.

Pride & Prejudice

One of my favorite stories by Jane Austen is Pride & Prejudice. The story is based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel. One of the first romantic comedies in novel form, the novel was originally titled First Impressions. The story addresses courtship and marriage during the Regency era in Georgian England, in particular the plight of the five Bennet sisters – Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia .

Anne of Green Gables

Oh, how I love the Anne of Green Gables series! So delightful. The stories develop and mature as does she. The stories just take me away into another time and I get lost in her world of Avonlea . . . Read the rest of this entry »
